Brownlee, SPOTYWilliam Hill has slashed the odds for Alistair Brownlee winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) from 100/1 to 10/1, after the triathlete attracted a rush of money for helping his brother over the finishing line at a race in Mexico.

The two-time Olympic Champion gave up his own chances of winning the race to aid the exhausted Jonny Brownlee, with both athletes passed by the South African Henri Schoeman. Despite being helped to a second placed finish, Jonny lost out in the overall rankings by just four points to Mario Mola, who came fifth in Mexico to become world champion for the first time.

Rupert Adams, Media Relations at William Hill, said: “The picture of Alistair helping his brother over the line is set to become one of the most iconic sporting snaps of 2016. Add that to another Olympic Gold, and he has to be a contender.”

With a raft of gold medallists from the Rio Olympics and Paralympics, the winner of this year’s award is far from easy to predict. 2016 has also been a year of ‘triple success’ for some of our elite sportsman, as Andy Murray secured his third Grand Slam at Wimbledon, and Chris Froome collected a third Tour de France victory in just four years.

Latest SPOTY Odds on William Hill:
