UK General Election 2017 odds cut

Following the announcement that the government must await Parliament’s involvement before Article 50 can be triggered, William Hill has cut its odds about a General Election taking place next year from 6/4 to 6/5.

Before you place that bet though, note that Hills makes 2020 the 10/11 favourite to be the year of the next General Election.

The Conservatives are 8/11 favourites with William Hill to win the next General Election with an overall majority, for which Labour are 6/1, with a Hung Parliament quoted at 13/8. Problems with a seemingly divided Labour party still persist in the wake of Jeremy Corbyn’s victory and rumours remain that the party could split though this is highly unlikely.

Hills have also opened a betting market on whether Parliament will get to vote on Article 50 before the end of next year – and offer 8/11 that there will be such a Parliamentary vote with even money that there will not.

In terms of the eventual Brexit, the bookmaker is offering 1/2 that the UK will leave the EU in 2019; 9/4 in 2020 or later and 6/1 2018 or earlier.

William Hill Spokesman Graham Sharpe commented: “The Article 50 question might yet trigger an early General Election according to some political punters.”
