It is not acceptable that the current government voted against the ban while all the other E.U. countries, including France,Spain, Greece and Italy who were initially opposed , voted in favour of the ban. Yet once more the Maltese government chose not to represent the interest of the common citizen, but to represent the interest of a few companies, notably the ones farming tuna for the Japanese market. It is clear that the government acted as a salesperson for these companies as the ban will undoubtedly effect their bottom line. The ultimate beneficiaries of this ban will be the marine environment. Every day, fish farms produce huge quantities of untreated waste consisting of fish faeces, uneaten food, pesticides, fungicides and feed additives which contain toxic metals. A European study regardscompares fish farms sewage to urban sewage in terms of impacts.
