Nothing changes in Qormi

Since many years that we are living in Qormi, we are suffering from the fumes emitted from chimneys of a few bakeries. I have involved in my quest to combat these pollutions many government entities and I have filed many police reports. Unfortunately I have not managed to stop these bakers and they are continuing intoxicating our air. I have taken the following video this week, unfortunately I could not record the smells…

I am publishing below a few of my email exchanges on the matter:

Dear Mr Piski

Please refer to your below correspondence.

As you might be aware, unfortunately the Local Council has no authority neither to evaluate and enforce health hazards issues nor to stipulate a policy on the operations of commercial outlets including bakeries.

On the other hand, the Local Council is very concerned about the health hazards being caused by bakeries and in the circumstances the Local Council has reported such abusive operations to the competent authorities, being Public Health Inspectorate Unit and MEPA.

The Council believes that although bakeries are important in our locality because they present a particular identity and provide traditional trade to the local economy, such operations MUST never be of detriment to the health and safety of the citizens.

The Local Council will keep on following this issue with the competent authorities.

I would like to thank you for interest and invite you to send us any information which would help us in the endevour to raise awareness about such health hazards.

Regards

Rosianne Cutajar

Mayor

Subject: Addressed to Mrs Cutajar: Killing people softly in Qormi

Dear Mrs Cutajar,

may I also ask the local council of Qormi to look into the issue of some local bakeries using machine oil to start their fires, thus emitting toxins in the air and endangering our health? I am trying since 2008 to get this malpractice to be stopped, filed several police reports, reported matters to MEPA and the health departments. Unfortunately, although some officials came on site to investigate, also to warn some of them, some of the bakeries are happily continuing killing us.
Some Zebbug officials of the health department visited us 2 months ago, we went round the bakeries, they spoke to some of them, and than these officials vanished and do not reply to my emails.

The address of the two bakeries with who we have issues are:

68 Triq San Pietru
2 Sqaq San Pietru

I hope that you as the elected major of Qormi, you understand that our health is at stake and that the local council will take adequate measures. You will find below my email communication with the “health” authorities and a letter I have written back in 2008: http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20080626/letters/need-to-stop-pollution-of-the-air-in-urban-zones.214129

May I also bring to your attention that this is not an Qormi issue, when I lived in Rabat early this year, I experienced the same pollution from bakeries.

If there is something else you would like to know, please feel free to contact me.

Best regards

Good afternoon,

with my Maltese family, we are living since several years in the old
part of Qormi next to Pjazza San Franjisk. Since the beginning, we are
having serious health issues with the local bakeries: they all use used
machine oil to start their ovens which obviously liberates toxins in the
air. The air becomes unbreathable and we have to close the windows or
wear gas masks. We have filed several police reports, have contacted
Mepa and the health centre in Zebbug. All without any success so far. It
is true that the police visited the bakeries, so did MEPA personnel and
people from the Health Department. They always came when the ovens were
off. I have asked these people on several occasions to take samples from
their chimneys to be analyzed (I was even ready to pay for these
analysis)., but this has been refused so far.

I would like to ask you to take action and protect the health of all

people living in Qormi, there is no reason our health should be put in
danger through gross negligence and stupidity (luckily one of the bakers
already died of cancer through his poisionous activities).

If no action is taken from your department, I will have no other recurse
than to take legal actions.

Best regards,

Henrik Piski
