No Joke! Bookmakers slash odds on PM May’s 2017 exit

Katie Baylis – Betfair

Closing this week’s ‘2017 Conservative Party Conference’ in Manchester, there would be no blazing comeback for PM Theresa May.

Ahead of delivering her headline speech, The Tory PR spin machine had detailed that PM May’s keynote would unite the cabinet following its postSnap election divisions and appeal to Britain’s young.

However, delivering a limp speech in which May was hindered by a cough, and further embarrassed by Comedian Lee Nelson’s ‘P45 prank’, UK political commentators and bookmakers’ wonder whether Theresa will ‘walk the plank’.

Reacting to May’s speech, Betfair Politics now prices UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson at 4/1 to succeed Theresa May as Tory Party leader. Following a strong showing at the conference, Home Secretary Amber Rudd has been priced down 8/1 from 12/1 by Betfair.

Betfair Politics Spokesperson, Katie Baylis, commented on markets “With media reports that a number of Tory party members are starting a movement to persuade her to stand aside, her odds of reaching the end of the year as leader have shortened from 9/1 to 5/2.

“May’s at 2/5 to be the next party leader to leave her position and if she goes, Boris Johnson is the leading contender to take over, with his odds shortening in the last 24 hours from 4/1 from 5/1, while David Davis is the 11/2 second favourite.”

Paddy Power

For May, there is no escaping the brutal reaction to her conference speech. Conservative newspaper The Daily Telegraph labelled it as ‘simply a tragic farce!’.

Paddy Power follows Betfair’s market sentiment, pricing down a number of Tory Party leadership contenders. The bookmaker prices May being replaced as PM this month at 5/1, while the bookie makes it Evens that she resigns within a year.

Political Spokesman Paddy Power said: “The presentation of a pretend P45 was a May Day warning for the PM, and we think the real thing won’t be far behind. May might have had a persistent cough yesterday, but her Party have been persistently telling her to, erm, ‘cough’ for months.”
