Today will see Yorkshire’s bid for devolution take to the House of Commons as the county seeks more autonomy, including electing a mayor for the entire region.
Paddy Power have slashed the odds on Yorkshire holding an independence referendum to 10/1, whilst also divulging the odds for the identity of the first mayor, should the county receive the devolved powers that it hopes for.
A spokesman for Paddy Power said: “It could soon be a case of Yorkshire free for a region that has long considered itself superior to the rest of the UK.
“As for a Mayor, Jessica Ennis-Hill is a long-shot – which is the opposite of her heptathlon career – but must be worth backing. After all, she’s well used to finishing first.”
MP for Keighley John Grogan, who has tabled tomorrow’s Westminster meeting, is the current favourite to occupy the potential mayoral seat, with the irish bookmaker placing him at 4/1.
Yorkshire party leader Stewart Arnold comes in at 6/1, with the local MPs for Barnsley Central and Hemsworth, Dan Jarvis and Jon Trickett, both sitting at 10/1.
Olympic heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill is among the outsiders at 33/1, with Jonathan Warburton at 50/1 and ex Sheffield United, Leeds United and Rotherham United manager Neil Warnock back at 80/1.
