Cheq-No-Mates! Paddy Power suspends market on May’s summer resignation

Paddy Power Politics has moved to suspend its betting market on ‘PM Theresa May resigning this quarter’ (July-September 2018).

The UK PM has failed to heal divisions within the Conservative government, as her ‘Chequers Brexit White Paper’ was demolished by hard-line Brexiteers who deemed the proposed arrangements as being governed by EU/EC laws, ‘leaving the UK Vassal state’.

Seeking to avoid a ‘Tory Civil War’, yesterday May backtracked making a number of hardline concessions related to the proposed Customs Bill, angering Party Remainers.

For now May has preserved her party leadership, however, Paddy Power Politics deems that ‘Theresa’s house of cards May have fallen’, as the bookmaker closes bets on May to step down before the end of the summer recess.

Updating its UK politics markets, Paddy Power details significant interest in its Next Conservative Leader’ market , which has Jacob Rees-Mogg (5/1) as the favourite, ahead of Home Secretary Sajid Javid (6/1), and Michael Gove (6/1).

As for Boris Johnson, whose resignation heaped more pressure on May last week, is now fourth-favourite – but Paddy Power details that ‘more bets have been placed on him entering the Big Brother house (16/1)’ than becoming Tory top boy.

The bookmaker maintains a low 10/11 price on Conservative Leadership Contest being triggered this year.

Joe Lee – Paddy Power Politics

Joe Lee, Head of Political Betting at Paddy Power, said: “A growing number have joined the Tory rebellion in recent weeks – but that’s nothing on the numbers betting on Mrs May standing down this quarter.

“The Prime Minister is calling for Parliament to take an early holiday this summer – perhaps she fancies making it a permanent one herself.”
