6 of the Best – Nektan’s Malcolm Campbell

This week’s 6 of the Best comes from Malcolm Campbell, Head of Compliance at Nektan.

Continue on to discover which Morgan Freeman hit never gets old, which side holds such sheer passion a full weeks wages was placed on its success and “one of the grittiest motor races of all time”.

Best Holiday

Amsterdam 2016. I’m the biggest blues and jazz fan, and the music scene in Amsterdam is second to none. Aside from its deep-rooted culture of liberalism, Amsterdam is an exuberant capital, brimming with energy and culture, inclusive of people from all walks of life. Its emphasis on eco-conscious living is refreshing, but its relaxed vibe is what I love most about the city – even the Head of Compliance needs a break!

Best Album

Queen’s Greatest Hits. In its heyday, Queen was the ultimate band. Musical geniuses to the core. I saw them live on their Magic Tour in 1986 and fell in love with their music instantly. Freddie Mercury – an incredible singer songwriter, was the ultimate showman. He had an innate ability of being able to captivate his audience within seconds of being on stage. The rest of the band including Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon delivered quality sounds which when packaged together was and still is, magic.

Best Sporting Experience

F1 Spanish Grand Prix, Barcelona, 2015. I watched Fernando Alonso go backwards in front of a stadium filled with a home crowd, in what turned out to be, in my opinion, one of the grittiest motor races of all time. Aside from Nico Rosberg being a very worthy winner, seeing a catastrophe to that degree was an experience in itself. It was an absolute shocker. Needless to say, the stands went from being full to capacity to completely empty within a matter of moments.

Best Film

Shawshank Redemption. The story of a man accused of a crime he did not commit and sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary in 1947. Over the course of a two-decade sentence, he builds friendships and foes while being instrumental in a money laundering operation for corrupt authorities. Both Morgan Freeman and Timothy Robins deliver an incredible performance. I never tire of watching it.

Best Book

The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k by Sarah Knight. This is a wonderful book that puts life into real context. It explores the art of managing your time among colleagues, friends and family to reach the end goal of leading a balanced and fulfilled life. Aside from it delivering a fresh perspective, it’s very entertaining. Hilarious in parts.

Best Bet

Featherstone Rovers to win the Challenge Cup, 1983. I bet an entire week’s salary (£17), and my first ever wage packet that the Featherstone Rovers would win the Challenge Cup. Fortunately for me, they did and I lived like a king for week. It was the best bet of my life, as I had everything and nothing to lose. It was based on sheer passion for the team I loved, and while I doubled my money, I tripled my love for the Featherstone Rovers.
