Historic Tiger Roll triumph sees bookmakers anticipate record breaking payouts

The historic triumph of Tiger Roll securing back-to-back victories at this weekend’s Grand National may lead to bookmakers paying out their most expensive result ever.

Becoming the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win back-to-back Grand Nationals, the Gordon Elliot trained nine-year-old stud has been branded ‘racing’s rockstar’ and the ‘punters dream‘.

Reacting to Tiger Roll’s, bookmakers communicated that the historic win could see the industry ‘payout between £200-250 million’.

George Elek – Oddschecker

Issuing a market update, George Elek Head of Media Relations at Oddschecker, detailed that punters had been backing Tiger Roll strongly since winning the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham 2019 (13 March), forcing bookmakers to price the stud as 5/1 (from 12/1) early Grand National favourite.

Oddschecker recognised as the UK’s leading sports betting portal further states that it had recorded bets on Tiger Roll everyday since its win at Cheltenham’.

Starting the race, at 4-1 favourite Tiger Roll becomes the shortest-priced Grand National winner since Poethlyn in 1919.

Commenting on the result, Alan Alger PR Spokesman for Betway, the official betting partner of Aintree, stated that Tiger Roll had delivered the ‘worst ever result for bookmakers’.

Alan Alger, Betway

Alger detailed “The quarter-of-a-billion-pound bombshell has landed. Tiger Roll has gone back-to-back and inflicted the most expensive result in Grand National history – we’ve been well and truly wiped out”.

The true cost of Tiger Roll’s historic achievement will likely be published in bookmakers upcoming interim results for 2019 trading, in what will be a severe dent on betting operators ‘unfavourable sporting results’ column.

Fred Done – Betfred

However, speaking to the Racing Post Paddy Power Betfair and Coral stated that they had mitigated the result, with a vast spread of wagers placed on all Grand National riders softening the blow of Tiger Roll.

Meanwhile, Industry figurehead Fred Done, Founder of Betfred would gracefully admit that he “had been mauled by a tiger again! – “But sometimes when you witness history you just have to pay out with a smile”.
