EGBA backs EU regulators demand for highest industry standards

Online gambling trade body, the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has underlined its support of regulatory authorities in placing a greater focus on social responsibility and safer gambling measures during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

The Brussels-based organisation, which represents online gambling at an EU-level, urges operators to counter political concerns by ensuring that consumers wager in safe and secure environments.

Reflecting calls undertaken by national trade bodies, the EGBA states that it opposes any use of Coronavirus advertising as a means to engage with customers.

Supporting national regulators and its industry counterparts, the EGBA has issued new guidance ensuring that European licensed operators maintain the highest standards and player protections as consumers are placed in self-isolation or lockdown.

Beyond undertaking stricter advertising disciplines, the EGBA urges operators to enhance monitoring of player behaviour, whilst further ensuring that all websites reference safer gambling tools and deposit wagering limits.

Should operators require further guidance on maintaining player safety standard, the EGBA advises incumbents to reference EU 478/2014 directives related to consumer protections for online gambling.

“We urge online gambling companies to share this information to any affiliate companies they work with and to ensure their brands are not being promoted in an unethical and socially irresponsible manner” the EGBA details closing its statement.
