DCMS renews Stephen Cohen tenure as a UKGC commissioner

Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS),  has approved the re-election of Stephen Cohen as a Commissioner of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC).

This week, DCMS confirmed that Cohen’s tenure as UKGC commissioner would be extended for a further four years until November 2024.

Described as an expert in corporate finance, auditing and governance of mass-market enterprises, Cohen has served on the UKGC’s commissioners board since 2016. He has also served as chair of audit committees for both the JPMorgan Japan Trust and Schroder UK Public-Private Trust.

The executive is currently a council member for The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the organisation charged with the regulatory oversight of 370,000 healthcare professionals.

DCMS confirmed that Cohen will be remunerated at £295 per day, in accordance with the Cabinet Office ‘governance codes on public appointments’.

The appointment of Cohen was confirmed prior to the House of Lords publishing its ‘Gambling Harm – Time for Action, in which a research select committee called upon the government to implement a roots-and-branch overhaul of UK gambling.

Recommending 66 urgent actions, the Lords Committee deemed that a UK gambling regime change was required in order to ‘prioritise the welfare of gamblers ahead of industry profits.
