Uber Will Start Accepting Crypto For Payments At Some Point, CEO Says

In a recent Bloomberg interview, CEO of leading rideshare application Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi said that there are two big hurdles to be taken before approving introducing digital assets to cover the cost of transportation and food deliveries on his platform.

Speaking with host Emily Chang on crypto for payments, the CEO noted:

“It definitely could. We’re having conversations all the time.

I think right now what we see with Bitcoin and some of the other cryptos, they are quite valuable as a store-of-value [but] the exchange mechanism is expensive. It’s not great for the environment.”

He added that cheaper and more sustainable crypto transactions would also be a step in the right direction for Uber to start considering crypto for payments:

“As the exchange mechanism becomes less expensive, becomes more environmentally friendly, I think you will see [Uber] lean into crypto a little bit more. We’re absolutely watching it. Is Uber going to accept cryptocurrency in the future? Absolutely, at some point.”

Khosrowshahi previously was the head of Expedia from 2005 to 2017, a company that was one of the first to start accepting Bitcoin for payments back in 2014.
