Minister Mallia should either resign or be removed immediately. He should shoulder his political responsibilities as he is ultimately responsible for the actions of his staff. It is simply unacceptable for the Police Minister’s handpicked staff to shoot at people. A serious Prime Minister should have demand the immediate resignation of such a Minister.
Anything less will mean that it is acceptable for Minister’s drivers and staff to see themselves above everyone else and untouchable.
Last night, the home affairs minister crossed the red line. Suspending his driver from ministerial escort duties, pending the outcome of a magisterial inquiry into the shooting incident in which the driver was involved last night is clearly not sufficient. Mallia’s ministry misled the public when it issued a statement saying that the minister’s driver fired two warning shots in the air. Photos show bullets lodged in the Briton’s car. His driver should be persecuted for carrying a weapon while not being on duty, for shooting in public.
