Will MPs be forced to reveal tax returns?

With the current Panama Papers scandal showing no sign of letting up anytime soon, the public is directing considerable focus to MPs and their taxes.

After current PM David Cameron, followed by Chancellor George Osborne and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn revealed their own earnings and tax payments, some have speculated that this will lead to regulation coming into play that’ll force each and every member of parliament to do the same.

Bookmaker William Hill isn’t so sure though it’s opened a betting market on the subject, with odds of 12/1 that such regulations will be in place when the next parliament begins after the next general election.

William Hill spokesperson Graham Sharpe said: “The decision by David Cameron, George Osborne and Jeremy Corbyn to reveal their tax returns has been followed by an opinion poll showing that 76% of the public believe all MPs should do the same, so there may be pressure for such a measure to be introduced.”

Jeremy Corbyn gave his backing to the idea and went one further stating his view that all those “involved in public life” should have to reveal their income tax returns. This would include numerous professions such as journalists.

William Hill is also of the opinion that David Cameron is relatively safe in his position despite calls for him to resign. The current odds for him to quit as PM this year are at 2/1 while they’re 6/1 that he’ll go during 2017.
