Non-league football club, Sutton United has accepted the resignation of reserve goalkeeper Wayne Shaw, who put the club in disrepute following Monday nights FA Cup fifth round match against Arsenal FC.

Shaw is currently being investigated by the FA and the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) for breaching English football rules relating to betting and integrity.

In question is whether Shaw purposely ate a pie during the match, in the knowledge that bookmaker Sun Bets had opened a novelty market ‘Wayne Shaw 8/1 to eat a pie live on air’.

Shaw has defended his position stating that his touchline antics were simply ‘for laughs’ and that neither himself or his team mates had taken any part on match betting.

The Sutton incident has brought embarrassment to bookmaker Sun Bets who had secured a one-off’ sponsorship with the Non-League football club and its ground for the BBC televised FA Cup game.

Yesterday afternoon, Sutton United management detailed to UK news sources that Shaw had left his position with the football club.

“Wayne himself offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon, which has been accepted. It’s a very sad end to what has been a very good story” commented Sutton United Manager Paul Doswell.
