La Liga & DGOJ collaboration strengthens Spanish football against corruption
Working alongside Spanish gambling regulator DGOJ, La Liga’s integrity unit has reported 39 suspicious betting alerts during the 2017/18 Spanish football season, which resulted in nine criminal court cases prosecuting match-fixing offences.
This week, La Liga and DGOJ officials presented Spanish media, with the results of their working collaboration on maintaining Spanish football’s integrity against corruption and match-fixing.
For season 2017/18, La Liga and DGOJ developed the ‘Pizarro’ and ‘Cortes’ football taskforces, which led to 53 arrests, as a result of the Judicial operations.
Out of the nine criminal cases put forward by La Liga, seven have been prosecuted by Spain’s judiciary.
In its update, La Liga details that not all of its cases were directly linked to betting manipulations, as some convictions primarily focused on club financing irregularities, which featured betting transactions.
During the 2017/18 Spanish football season, La Liga’s integrity unit monitored a total of 5049 matches in which bets were placed across the divisions of La Liga Santander, Liga 1/2/3, Segunda B and Tercera, as well as the Copa Del Rey tournament and syndicated friendly matches.
Across La Liga’s monitored matches, a total of 259 betting alerts were raised (5% occurrence rate), with 24 alerts moved forward as potential ‘betting manipulation events’.
Strengthening its anti-corruption framework and processes, during 2017/18 La Liga furthered its athlete educational facilities hosting 132 integrity and match-fixing workshops across all levels of Spanish football spectrum
