Blizzard introduced loot boxes through newer games like Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch, which give a way for the company to earn more money with the game. But interestingly, however, it looks like the company will be stepping back from paid loot boxes in Heroes of the Storm.

This news is based on the latest patch notes where Blizzard says that loot boxes will no longer be able to be purchased using Gems. Gems were the only way to purchase loot boxes in the game, and were only obtainable by using real-life money to get them. So Blizzard has announced that loot boxes can only be purchased using Gold and they will be priced at 3000 Gold pieces.

Gold can be earned through playing the game, so players will be able to save and earn their gold pieces to get a loot box with no real money involved. With the controversy surrounding loot boxes in the past, this is probably a good idea. Blizzard is likely trying to reduce the fallout here.
