Cabinet comeback sees Nicky Morgan take charge of DCMS

The office of new UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed the appointment of  Nicky Morgan MP for Loughborough as Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS).

DCMS the government department which oversees the regulatory development, implementation and oversight of gambling laws formed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) changes leader for the fourth time in three years, as Morgan replaces 2018 appointment, Jeremy Wright.

The appointment has been branded as a ‘cabinet comeback’ for Morgan who served as the former Secretary of State for Education (2014-2016) under PM David Cameron but would not hold any senior position under PM Theresa May’s government.

Leading the department, Morgan will be supported by Mims Davies who retains her role as Secretary of State for Sport & Civil Society, overseeing the government’s relationship with UK gambling and horseracing sectors.

Last year, Morgan clashed with former Chancellor Philip Hammond in relation to the government delaying its enforcement FOBTs £2 wagering reduction.

Morgan accused the government of “prioritising the preservation of jobs in the gambling industry over the addiction of those who suffer from these machines?

In relation to UK gambling,  Nicky Morgan takes charge of DCMS as the UKGC establishes its team to lead the 4th UK National Lottery tender in 2020, assessing competitors who will challenge incumbent Camelot for the right to hold onto the UK National Lottery monopoly, which expires in 2023.
