GamCare partners with Adfam to broaden scope of Lived Experience Group

GamCare has moved to broaden the formation of its ‘Lived Experience Group’, working with UK family support and addiction treatment charity Adfam.

The development of a lived experience group has been marked as key 2020 initiative by GamCare governance, providing UK treatment and research stakeholders vital first-hand real-life insights on living with problem gambling addiction.

This July, GamCare announced that it had begun taking applications to form the core advisory for the development of its lived experience group, who will meet once a month to discuss developments with regards to gambling addiction treatment and prevention services.

Helping achieve its objective, GamCare has partnered with Adfam, a UK charity that since 1984 has operated a UK-wide family support network for addictions related to drug and alcohol abuse, and further supports those affected by gambling.

The cooperation between the two charities will see GamCare support Adfam with the development of its own ‘Lived Experience Advisory Group’ programme – as the charity seeks to deepen understanding of UK addiction support structures.

GamCare’s directive has been replicated by the UKGC, who this summer disclosed that it formed a ‘Experts by Experience Group broadening its research on gambling-related risks, triggers, disorders and stigmas to help further develop the UK’s National Gambling Treatment Service.

Launching the directive UKGC Chief Executive Neil McArthur, said: “Our goal is to make gambling safer for consumers and the creation of the interim group is another important step in helping us bring a wider range of perspectives into our work”.
