FIFA suspends Kieran Trippier gambling ban pending appeal
Kieran Trippier’s 10-week worldwide ban from football has been suspended by FIFA at “the request for provisional measures lodged by Atletico Madrid“, after the England defender was accused of breaching the FA’s betting regulations.
Trippier was issued with a £70,000 fine and 10-week ban which has now been put on hold by FIFA, pending an appeal.
“Following the appeal and, specifically, the request for provisional measures lodged by the club Atletico Madrid, the FIFA Appeal Committee has approved to stay the extension of the suspension until the procedure is over before the committee,” a FIFA spokesperson commented.
The 30-year-old, who currently plays for Atletico Madrid in the La Liga, was handed a ban and a fine in December after an independent regulatory commission proved four of the seven breaches. However, Trippier denies the allegations from July 2019 when he first moved out to Spain.
Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín emphasised that the ban was ‘disproportionate for the player and totally unjust for Atletico’.
Trippier was forced to sit out the La Liga giants’ midweek clash against Getafe on Wednesday evening, which Atletico edged 1-0 in his absence.
