MGA appoints Dr Brincat as new CEO
The board of governors of the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has confirmed the appointment of Dr Carl Brincat as new Chief Executive Officer of the regulatory authority with immediate effect.
Brincat replaces former incumbent Heathcliff Farrugia who declined to renew his tenure as MGA CEO last November, informing the Malta government that he had chosen to work in the private sector.
An expert in criminal law, Brincat has previously served as the MGA’s Chief Legal and Enforcement officer, leading its legal team and strategic direction on compliance matters.
Confirming Brincat’s appointment, the MGA’s board highlighted the executive’s diverse experience and skillset having led and advised a number of key Malta government committees.
“Carl sits on the Board of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit, and is a member of the Chamber of Advocates (Malta), the International Masters of Gaming Law (IMGL), and the International Association of Gambling Regulators (IAGR)” The MGA stated.
2019 and 2020 directives saw the MGA broaden its support and cooperation networks with counterpart EU regulatory agencies and policing authorities cooperating on sports integrity and AML threats.
On leading the MGA, Brincat commented: “It is an honour to be selected to lead the organisation at such a critical juncture for the MGA and the industry alike. I am proud of the work that has been done by the Authority so far in raising regulatory standards and committed to ensuring that we continue along this path.”
He added: “However, it is essential that we cultivate stronger partnerships with other regulators and stakeholders, and the industry itself, to achieve a regulatory environment that accomplishes the MGA’s objectives as set out in the law in the most effective, transparent, and proportionate manner.”
