Binance Hires Former Europol Investigator
Binance has brought in Europol investigator Nils Andersen-Röed as its new director of audit and investigations. This was announced on Thursday by the cryptocurrency exchange in a company blog post.
The appointment is part of the exchange’s dedication to tighten its regulatory compliance and security amid intensifying actions by regulators across the globe.
Andersen-Röed will be part of the larger investigations team. He is expected to protect Binance users’ holdings and assist law enforcement agencies in their investigations. He will do so by conducting “internal and external investigations” to identify individuals who are trying to use the Binance platform for possible illegal purposes, the announcement said.
Prior to joining the world’s leading crypt exchange, Andersen-Röed spent almost three years on Europol’s Dark Web Team. This multi-agency initiative is tasked to reduce dark web crime.
Andersen-Röed commented on his appointment in the blog post and said:
“My goal is to make the cryptocurrency industry (and Binance in particular) a safer place.”
He then reiterated the importance of joining hands calling “International collaboration between industry and law enforcement agencies essential.” He added that:
“Criminals do not care about borders.”
The recent hirings at Binance are an obvious tell of the company’s ambitions. And could it be that the exchange that has been in such scrutiny lately, is now become an industry leader when it comes to compliance? Are they going to be an example to follow?
Recently in August, Binance appointed former U.S. Treasury enforcement investigator Greg Monahan to lead its anti global money laundering efforts.
