Epic Welcomes Blockchain and NFT after Steam Removes such Games

After Steam has updated its guidelines for what content creators are allowed to publish on the platform, and thereby effectively banning crypto and NFT-related games on the platform, its rival Epic Games came out welcoming blockchain technology.

According to Steam, no applications built on blockchain technology that “issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs” are permitted in its onboarding process. Not only can this have a huge effect on existing game developers making use of Steam, the move will also drastically impact Steam’s profitability now that blockchain games are surging.

In stark contrast, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that their Epic Games Store would allow games using blockchain technology as long as the developers stick to the relevant laws and be open about their terms and conditions. Sweeney said:

“Though Epic’s not using crypto in our games, we welcome innovation in the areas of technology and finance.”

Speaking to The Verge, Sweeney said that Epic is willing to work with early developers in the field of NFTs. He also clarified that Epic will not support cryptocurrency transactions through its payment service and advised developers to use another payment system.

Epic Games, best known for its sensational global hit Fortnite, is not planning to use NFTs in its own products, Sweeney already told his Twitter entourage in September.
