Gibraltar to Integrate Blockchain Technology into Public Services

The British Overseas Territory located on Spain’s south coast, Gibraltar, announced a project to improve the delivery of its public services.

According to a press release on Tuesday, the headland dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar will start a trial of integrating blockchain technology into its legacy systems.

Building on the existing functionality of its “eGov” system, a digital platform for using public services, the project looks to demonstrate the multitude of advantages blockchain technology has on speed and efficiency of government processes and public interactions.

Latin American crypto exchange Bitso and RSK blockchain developer IOVlabs will partner with the government on the project, the announcement said. RSK is known as Bitcoin’s smart contract platform.

In the last decade, Gibraltar has shown to provide a friendly environment for crypto businesses to obtain licenses. Cryptocurrency platform, eToro is licensed by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission and recently, Chinese crypto exchange Huobi Global moved its trading services to Gibraltar after being persecuted in its home country.
