William Hill Under Scrutiny in UK After Submitting Incorrect Data to Regulator

UK-based gaming operator William Hill could be given a fine by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) after news that the company provided incorrect data to the regulator. The UKGC said it will now be re-analyzing figures related to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on betting habits because of the error.

In response to concerns that lockdowns have the effect on people to spend too much time betting online, the UKGC has made it a habit to publish regular updates since March 2020 on how much customers of big i-gaming (online) firms, including William Hill, are losing.

In an update published on December 13, the commission said it had discovered William Hill provided “incorrect datapoints” for the period between March 2020 and September 2021, as reported by The Guardian.

Consequently, the Gambling Commission will now re-analyze all its data, and push a corrected report back to February. It also said to be “reviewing any regulatory consequences” of William Hill’s negligence.

The UKGC publications are considered a key resource for academics and health workers in trying to get an idea on the effect of the pandemic on (problem) gambling behavior during the pandemic. Its report collects data from roughly 80% of the industry operating in the UK.

Amidst the scrutiny, William Hill’s license is likely not at stake. Nevertheless, a financial penalty is within expectations for breaching the terms of operations on the British peninsula.

William Hill is currently in the process of finalizing a $2.9 billion take over from 888 Holdings who will be acquiring it from US Caesars Entertainment. It is expected to come true in during Q2 of 2022.
