New Approved Patent Reveals Ambitious Disney Metaverse Plans

Global entertainment and media giant has its eyes on the metaverse after it has been approved for a “virtual-world simulator” patent towards the end of last year.

The patent covers personalized interactive attractions for theme park visitors and the new technology would allow for headset-free augmented reality (AR) attractions at Disney theme parks.

The entertainment firm’s metaverse will therefore not exist online by using virtual reality or artificial reality tools, but bring it to the visual world.

Visitors of the Disney worlds, would be tracked on their mobile phones, after which personalized 3D effects will be projected onto nearby physical spaces, walls, and other objects.

The patent’s abstract reads:

“In one implementation, a virtual-world simulator includes a computing platform having a hardware processor and a memory storing a software code, a tracking system communicatively coupled to the computing platform, and a projection device communicatively coupled to the computing platform.

The hardware processor is configured to execute the software code to obtain a map of a geometry of a real-world venue including the virtual-world simulator, to identify one or more virtual effects for display in the real-world venue, and to use the tracking system to track a moving perspective of one of a user in the real-world venue or a camera in the real-world venue.”

Disney’s patent was filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in July 2020 ad approved on December 28. 2021.

The company already hinted towards its plans during its last earnings call of 2021 where the CEO noted that it is in preparation of mixing physical and digital assets in the metaverse. He had said:

“We’ll be able to connect the physical and digital worlds even more closely, allowing for storytelling, without boundaries in our own Disney Metaverse.”
