Entain CEO Complains About Gambling Industry Image

Jette Nygaard-Anderson, CEO of Entain plc, opines that the gambling industry has an “unfair” reputation, and asks the public to view gambling operators as trusted entertainment providers.

Speaking with Sunday Times and reported by City AM, Nygaard-Anderson calls on policymakers to avoid implementing gambling rules that are too strict. She explained that a strict set of rules may divert gamblers into the unsupervised underground operators.

Entain’s leading woman requests for UK ministers to seek a healthy balance with the impending new rules, which are expected to be published in a white paper this spring. Issues under consideration include the reduction of minimum wagers and the introduction of affordability checks for users.

Nygaard-Anderson’s concerns come after research from the Betting and Gaming Council last year showed that the number of customers using an unlicensed betting website rose from 210,000 in 2019, to 460,000. Nygaard-Anderson said:

“It is somewhat unfair, the reputation that our industry has. It is utterly important for me that our customers understand that we have their safety at heart, and that they see us as a trusted entertainment provider.”

Her interview with the Sunday Times coincides with the scrutiny her company is under in relation to the £102 million ($138.2 million) Entain’s brand Ladbrokes received from the UK government’s furlough scheme and so far refuses to refund.

Perhaps instead of complaining about the industry’s image, Entain might better review its own actions and operations to see what it can improve on themselves.
