New York State Sports Betting Launched, Shattering Records
It’s been a long wait but on Saturday morning, the New York online and mobile sports betting market finally kicked off with Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel and Rush Street Interactive’s BetRivers. It turned out to be a successful launch of sports betting in the state, with GeoComply’s geolocation volumes in the weekend showing a total of 17.2 million logins.
New York City’s boroughs alone exceeded 8 million, significantly more than any other standalone state total within the US, Lindsay Slader, Managing Director Gaming at GeoComply, noted. He said:
“In just 12 hours, New York has become the top state for sports betting in the US. A launch this size is historically unprecedented, with volumes eclipsing the second closest ranked state, Pennsylvania, by approximately 2.5 times.”
The first NY bets were placed at 9:01 a.m., a minute after the four newly licensed gaming operators opened its virtual doors. At the time of writing, no specifics on revenues were disclosed by the online gaming operators, however the state’s Gaming Commission said this data will be shared on a monthly basis.
In addition, the state’s Gaming Commission has said on Thursday before the launch that the five conditionally licensed operators (PointsBet, BetMGM, Resorts World, BallyBet, WynnBet) “continue to work towards satisfying statutory and regulatory requirements necessary to launch” and will receive their license to operate once they meet the requirements.
New York State with a population of over 19 million people is looking to become the biggest active market for only sports betting in the United States with over a billion revenue projected on an annual basis. In comparison, Pennsylvania holds over 12 million residents. California state with 34 million people living still remains unlicensed territory.
