El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele Cancels Bitcoin Conference Appearance Following Unrest At Home

Citing “unforeseen circumstances” that demand his full attention in his home country, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele cancelled his planned participation at the upcoming Bitcoin 2022 conference in Miami.

Bukele made his apologies in a directed to the conference organizers. While not detailing the exact circumstances in his country, they look to be related to a fierce battle the El Salvador government is fighting against criminal gangs in the country.

The ‘Bitcoin president’ commented:

“I will have to be in another flank in the battle for freedom.”

Recently 62 people were killed which prompted the country’s Legislative Assembly to initiate a martial law for 30 days. So far almost 7000 gang members have been arrested in the last 10 days, according to the El Salvador National Police.

It was at last year’s Bitcoin 2021 conference in June that Bukele announced his Bitcoin Law and in the letter the president said he had “sincere hope” of joining this year’s event to make “another announcement, another small contribution in our fight for the liberation of money.”

Bitcoin 2022, has kicked off on Thursday and will be happening in Miami, Florida until April 9.
