Amazon CEO Jassy: “Cryptocurrency Not Yet a Payment Option”

On Thursday morning, Amazon (AMZN) CEO Andy Jassy said on CNBC Squawk Box that the e-commerce and cloud-computing giant will not yet be adding cryptocurrency as a payment option for its retail business. He did note that selling NFTs (non-fungible tokens) could be a legitimate possibility in the future, however refrained from giving a timeline.

Jassy said:

“I think NFTs have really started to take off… I expect that NFTs will continue to grow very significantly. We’re not probably close to adding crypto as a payment mechanism in our retail business. But I do believe over time that you’ll see crypto become bigger… [Selling NFTs] is possible down the road.”

The CEO also said to expect cryptocurrencies to continue its growth rate, while noting that he doesn’t own any Bitcoin or NFT personally.

Jassy’s first annual shareholder letter since taking over as CEO from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos last year, released on Thursday, did not mention Bitcoin, cryptocurrency or NFTs either.

Last July, crypto markets spiked after a job offering at Amazon’s Payments Acceptance & Experience team fueled rumors that the retail giant was going to start accepting Bitcoin for payments.
