Instagram to Add Support for NFTs, Kicks Off With U.S. Pilot

Meta is set to make an announcement on Monday that it will be commencing a pilot bringing NFTs from some of the most popular blockchains to Instagram.

Reports from sources close to the matter indicate that the social media platform plans to support non-fungible token (NFT) integrations for the most popular networks, Ethereum, Polygon, Solana and Flow.

It is not yet clear if Instagram will back NFTs from all four chains at the start of the pilot, which will feature a small group of U.S. based NFT fans.

In contrast to Twitter when it launched NFT profile pictures in January for its Blue users, Instagram will not be charging users for showcasing their digital art.

Crypto wallets such as MetaMask are also planned to be fully supported, thereby allowing users to verify NFT ownership.

In March this year during Austin’s South by Southwest Festival (SXSW), Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said they were “working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term.”
