EBay Launches Collection of Sports-Themed NFTs

The Popular e-commerce platform eBay (EBAY) has launched a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), a hockey-themed drop in partnership with Tezos- and Polygon-based NFT platform OneOf.

With its own release the online marketplace giant, with more than 140 million users, makes its debut into the digital collectibles space.

The price to pay for the NFTs will be between $10 and $1,500, purchasable via the usual fiat payment methods that the platform offers. The first ones will feature hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. The collection is a continuation of OneOf’s partnership with Sports Illustrated.

Eight years ago, eBay was one of the first large online platforms to recognize Bitcoin, when it included a category for ‘Virtual Currency’ on its US site, offering listings for many Bitcoin and altcoin-related activities like shares in mining operations.

In May of 2021 ,eBay included NFT sales of which CEO Jamie Iannone said that this simply emerged naturally:

“Even without announcing anything or doing anything, people started trading NFTs on the platform. It reminded me of many years ago when people just started selling cars when we didn’t even have a vehicle business at that point. So we’re seeing the same type of thing.”
