Qatar Airways Entering the Metaverse with its QVerse

Qatar Airways has announced that it launched its first metaverse experience, the QVerse. Customers and other interested parties can virtually visit and navigate the Premium Check-in area at the International Airport of Hamad (HIA) through the virtual reality platform.

The company’s entry into the metaverse is a reflection of passengers desire for “immersive content that can empower their decision-making before buying a ticket, and are often eager to discover the aircraft they will fly,” the company said.

A company representative stated:

“That’s why we believe QVerse will change the way passengers make their shopping choices.”

Stressing that these are just the first steps into the metaverse, the airliner will be expanding its virtual environment initiatives as the metaverse is considered part of the future of human relations.

The company will also be adding more functionalities, places and interactions to its metaverse platform, thereby making the experience sociable and accessible through the Oculus Quest VR platform.

Furthermore, purchases of tickets for physical flights and the choice of seats on real aircraft can be made through the metaverse. Although he company is set on creating its own virtual world, it does not dismiss a future presence in metaverses like Decentraland and The Sandbox:

“We are currently focusing on creating our metaverse rather than investing in Decentraland or Sandbox. But we do not rule out this plan. We continue to explore how we can develop this area and strategically incorporate NFTs into QVerse.”

In alignment with developments in the United Arab Emirates’ digital economy, fellow Middle Eastern based airliner, Emirates, recently announced its journey into the metaverse.
