AQUA Launches Flagship Gaming Marketplace And Lands M Investment

Web3 community platform startup for gamers, AQUA, has announced a $10 million investment on Wednesday as it also launched its flagship marketplace for trading in-game assets.

Aiming to release new titles every month, the AQUA marketplace will highlight featured games and currently has partnered with three titles, which include God’s Unchained and Guild of Guardians.

The $10 million financial injection into the platform comes from the hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen powered investment firm DIGITAL. Cohen himself moved into crypto in 2018 and is owner of MLB team the New York Mets.

AQUA is founded by former Facebook employees, Sean Ryan and John Cahil with the former now in the CEO role at the startup. Together they founded an initial concept of the metaverse in 14 years called Meez.

According to Ryan, the community interaction is an important aspect of their new marketplace and hopes to stand out in the gaming industry with this. In an interview, he said:

“You can definitely go to OpenSea or a general-purpose marketplace and purchase gaming assets. But we want gamers who are interested in, ‘How do I play this game? What do I do with these assets? How do I find other people to play with?’”

Furthermore, the AQUA CEO commented on the role of gaming in driving the next massive adoption of Web3 and highlighted:

“Gaming is going to be the primary venue for the next 300 million people to get into Web3. Gaming is the biggest, fastest-growing media on the planet and has some pretty technically adept folks who can put up with some of the friction that we see right now if they’re really excited about the game.”
