IBIA and DSWV highlight integrity as ‘key part’ of German betting transformation

The German Sports Betting Association (DSWV) and the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Underlining a joint objective of coordinating activities and efforts on betting and associated integrity issues, the duo have outlined that they will ‘pool their expertise’ in these areas.

The long-term objective of the partnership is to promote a ‘viable regulated sports betting market in Germany’, using high consumer challenging and integrity protection measures.

“The partnership between the German Sports Betting Association and IBIA is another welcome step forward for the German sports betting industry,” said Mathias Dahms, DSWV President.

“With its many years of international experience and expertise in the field of sports integrity, the IBIA will support us in strengthening the regulated market and protecting it from manipulation. We therefore look forward to many joint projects and constructive cooperation.”

The organisations have announced their partnership as the German sports betting and gaming market continues to feel the impacts of the Fourth Interstate Gambling Treaty (GlüNeuRStv) introduced last year.

Sports betting is a relatively stable place in Germany, with the country’s large, sports-loving population still keen to place wagers, although casino products such as online poker are facing tougher restrictions.

However, the DSWV has warned of the threat posed to the regulated betting scene and sports industries by illegal black market operators.

In September, Dahms stated that the black market for betting and gaming in the country had reached gigantic propositions’, with the DSWV having identified over 400 unlicensed websites available to German customers.

The association has argued against Germany’s federal advertising code in response, arguing that prohibition of marketing via traditional media formats prevents regulated operators from promoting the legal offering.

Commenting on the DSWV’s addition to the IBIA, Khalid Ali, IBIA CEO, added: “IBIA recognises the important work that the DSWV has done over the years in transforming the German regulated sports betting market.

“That market transformation is ongoing and betting integrity is a key part of that discussion. Indeed, the market provides a number of important opportunities and challenges for both of our associations and their respective members.

“IBIA looks forward to working closely with the DSWV to improve and protect the German sports betting market for consumers, sports and betting operators.”
