Dutch KSA cracks down on operators “pushing the boundaries” on World Cup advertising

The Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit(KSA), will be “extra alert” throughout the remainder of the World Cup after recently speaking with two providers over an advert during a game that said people could create a pool on the tournament.

The regulator underlined its views that the rules on games of chance are clear, but this latest issue showed that “providers of gambling activities seem to push the boundaries here and there”.

In a statement, the KSA said: “The Ksa has approached two providers about advertising in a game in which people can create a World Cup pool. This is not allowed.

“This is to prevent people who are interested in games, mostly young people, from being tempted by advertisements to participate in games of chance. The gambling providers have stopped doing this.

“In the past week, a number of providers of games of chance were once again held accountable for the prohibited use of role models in advertising or sponsorship.

“The name or logo of a gambling company cannot be in the same communication as the image, voice or name of a role model. This also applies to sponsoring an event or TV programme. These providers have been summoned to stop the violation and have complied.”

Since the start of the World Cup, the KSA has issued a total of 14 warnings to gambling companies due to advertising breaches.

It had previously warned that it would be considering enforcement action and even “more far-reaching regulation” should a “new tidal wave of advertising” be witnessed during the tournament.
