This weekend, metaverse reality the Sandbox was host to the first ever metaverse wedding, an absolutely milestone for the collective virtual community space. What might be impossible or traditionally frowned upon in Asian weddings is now possible in the Metaverse. On September 17, Bandwagon CEO Clarence Chan and his bride Joanne Tham celebrated their love for each other by having a 70s-inspired disco glam wedding at The Alkaff Mansion in the Metaverse.

For this special occasion, Metaverse Architecture and Web3 design agency Smobler Studios was responsible for the virtual venue in the Sandboc and recrreated the Alkaff Mansion and its unique architecture. Guests attending the couple’s brick-and-mortar wedding at the hotel can live in a slick virtual world. The custom ’70s-themed avatars danced to the music after The Sandbox’s co-founder and COO Sebastien Borget announced the couple husband and wife in the historical first Metaverse wedding.

To mark the momentous occasion, the newly wed couple shared their first kiss in a virtual world. After the romantic moment, the couple virtually left (for a virtual wedding night?), allowing their guests to continue enjoying the rest of the wedding in real life.

In a post-pandemic world, digital weddings can really make couples’ dream weddings come true as they can be designed according to your own ideas, but do they beat a real wedding?

Nevertheless, Loretta Chen, Co-Founder of Smobler Studios said:

“We are thrilled at being able to create Singapore’s first ever metaverse wedding with Clarence and Joanne in The Sandbox. The platform allows friends, family and loved ones from afar to join in the celebrations across the globe. We are exploring merely the tip of the iceberg with this inaugural wedding. We cannot wait to see what other couples decide to create in time to come, be it a fairy tale, gravity defying bohemian, Star Wars inspired or Bridgerton wedding. Even the sky is no longer the limit with the open metaverse.”

Jessie Tan, marketing representative of The Alkaff Mansion, added:

“We are glad to be able to pave the way for the future of weddings and intimate gatherings, where great memories are forged in a space where we can keep replaying it. The Alkaff Mansion is one of Singapore’s most romantic locations set against luscious greenery. We are very happy that the elegance and beauty of The Alkaff Mansion was wonderfully replicated in The Sandbox by Smobler Studios.”
